Sustainable building is nothing new to JBG SMITH, a publicly traded real estate investment trust. The company has a history of developing sustainable buildings and is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. Additionally, it helped develop the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. For the new environmentally friendly HQ of JBG SMITH in Bethesda MD, Sempergreen provided a Cradle to Cradle certified Indoor SemperGreenwall.
Custom green wall design
Because of the pregrown Flexipanels, the plants fill every nook and cranny of the wall. This is because the panels can be modified to all kinds of different specifications, and it was therefore possible to have plants wrapped tightly around each wall penetration and pipe. For the plant design, Sempergreen followed the rendering provided by Partners by Design and tailored the shapes and colors of the plants to their initial design.
Web based irrigation system
The wall is connected to the internet by a web based irrigation system, which ensures a green result all year round. With this system the living wall can be monitored from anywhere in the world to ensure that the plants receive the right amount of moisture and nutrients at all times. If problems occur, the plant care system will send out a warning immediately, to prevent any lasting damage to the SemperGreenwall.
The SemperGreenwall was installed by Sempergreen Services.
