The multi-award winning United States Coast Guard Headquarters is the first project at the new DHS St. Elizabeths Campus. Completed in 2016, the US Coast Guard Headquarters features several construction and operating measures in accordance with LEED v2.2 Gold certification, including an over 400,000 square feet of green roof with Sempergreen Sedum mats used for storm water management and energy efficiency, which forms the second largest green roof system in the nation.

Each green roof reflects local eco-region

Each green roof and courtyard, constisting of a variety of plants, trees and Sedums, is both a literal and abstract expression of five local eco-regions, from the Piedmont uplands down to the coastal plain. The Sempergreen Sedum mats contain 9 to 15 different species of Sedum per 100 sqft.

LEED Gold certification

Formerly a government-run hospital for the insane which opened in 1855, the St. Elizabeths Hospital site is a National Historic Landmark. In an effort to provide a more unified, secure campus that brings together its executive leadership and operational management, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) consolidates its headquarters at the 176-acre St. Elizabeths Campus. During construction, the General Services Administration increased its green building requirements for all newly constructed federal buildings from LEED Silver to LEED Gold. Despite the change, the team secured the LEED Gold Certification.

The US Coast Guard Headquarters, DHS St. Elizabeths Campus project has received no less than 16 awards.
