Several garden sheds in Assen, The Netherlands, have been fitted with a lightweight green roof by Groentotaal A. de Boer. Commissioned by the Actium housing association, a total of 220 m² of Sedum was installed on the roofs. Applying Sedum roofs makes the densely built residential area a lot greener. In addition, the green roofs contribute to the delayed discharge of rainwater to relieve the sewer system.
Lightweight green roof buffers water
In the lightweight green roof structure, the roof garden substrate is replaced by a Substrate roll. This is a roll consisting of rock wool fibers and is easy to roll out on the roof. It is a good growing medium for the Sedum plants. This construction is not only ideal for its weight, the composition of the Substrate roll ensures that this material ensures excellent water absorption. This reduces the peak load on the sewer.
