In recent years, the German supermarket chain LIDL has enhanced several of their stores with green roofs. This is part of their ongoing sustainability and environment protection strategy (read more here). In the Stockholm region, the new LIDL Headquarters and the store next door have been adorned with green roofs as well. In total, Takfix installed 4000 m² of Sedum in Barkarbystaden, Järfälla.
This new head office has received the environmental certification BREEAM Excellent and will initially accommodate over 400 employees. Did you know that green roofs also contribute to BREEAM scores?
Environmental and economic benefits
In addition to delivering a positive environmental impact, green roofs have several economic benefits. They help decrease the so-called ‘Urban Heat Island Effect’ by keeping the roof and thus the building cooler in summer. This reduces the need for air conditioning, saving energy and money. At the same time the green roof protects the underlying roofing materials from external influences like bright sun and heavy winds, doubling the live span of the roof.
