With some 40,000 visitors a year, the gardens of A.Vogel, known for its natural self-care products, in the Dutch town of ‘t Harde are a popular destination. A new visitor centre, designed by architect Johan Hofman of VersteeghHofman Architects, opened in spring 2023. This centre acts as a starting and ending point for visitors. A natural and sustainable appearance was therefore important, in line with the values A. Vogel aspires to project. That is why the roof of the centre is fitted with solar panels on the underside and, on the sloping roof at the front, with a 340m2 vapour-proof sloping green roof system by Sempergreen.

The power of nature

The Veluwe's new visitor centre tells the story of nature's power for health. The gardens produce some 50,000 kilos of medicinal plants every year, and this process is extensively illustrated in the centre with photos, videos, an audio tour and interactive elements. With the installation of a green roof, the new visitor centre is fully integrated into the landscape and serves as a gateway to the A.Vogel gardens. Heating for the building is provided by a heat pump that draws energy from the ground, while part of the energy comes from solar panels on the roof. Thus, nature not only provides power for health but also for energy supply.

Vapour-proof steeply pitched green roof

The green roof, installed by Daktec Bewust Groen with consultation from Sempergreen, is a special project. The structure of this steeply pitched green roof consists of a water buffering fleece, anti-shear measures, roof garden substrate and Sedum blankets, suitable for sloping roofs up to 45 degrees. Regular maintenance of sloping green roofs is important, especially in a tree-rich environment. The green roof is therefore fitted with Flesst fall protection during installation, so that maintenance can always be carried out safely. A roof edge profile ensures that rainwater flows under the solar panels to the gutter, which is both practical and aesthetic. All in all, a highly sustainable project, underlining the power of nature!
