Maintaining your green roof

An extensive green roof is almost maintenance free, but your roof garden will always need a little maintenance. This includes removing weeds carried by the wind and applying fertilizer several times a year. The plants will not be damaged by walking on them when conducting this maintenance. They are strong enough to be able to compensate for this.

Maintenance manual

Immediately after installation

1. Fertilization

Fertilize the green roof immediately after installation.

2. Watering

If the green roof is installed in a warm and dry period, we recommend watering the green roof regularly for the first 2 to 3 weeks. This will enable the plants to sink their roots into the substrate.

Annual maintenance

1. Roof inspection

Inspect the green roof at least 5 times a year for weeds and seeds (carried by the wind) and remove these manually. Do this preferably in the spring, before the weeds begin to flower. To encourage biodiversity, we do not recommend the use of chemical pesticides. The number of inspections will depend on the greenery in the vicinity of your roof.

In addition, check whether the drainage system is still functioning properly. Remove any leaves blown into the gutters and drains.

2. Fertilization

Fertilize every 9 months. To give your green roof an extra boost, you can fertilize it once in April and in September.
