Barcelona sets a new standard with this groundbreaking project, merging urban mobility and greening on an unprecedented scale. The city achieved a spectacular transformation with 8,000 m² of greenery for the new tram line between Plaça de Les Glòries and Passeig Verdaguer. This 2 km route is not just a technological milestone but an ecological masterpiece that showcases the perfect harmony of mobility and sustainability. The key to the solution’s success lies in Sempergreen’s instant-green ground cover.
The ultimate symbiosis of technology and nature
Barcelona dares to dream big. The city has ambitious plans to enhance urban mobility while improving sustainability and liveability. As part of its Urban Mobility Plan 2024 (PMU), Barcelona aims for over 80% of all journeys to be made on foot, by public transport, or by bicycle by 2024. For the new tramline, Barcelona sought the ultimate blend of technology and nature—a green, functional, and innovative solution that contributes significantly to biodiversity and climate adaptation.
Strengthening biodiversity and mitigating water issues during heavy rainfall
Barcelona’s city council envisioned a tramline that redefines urban mobility while acting as a catalyst for ecological progress. The goals were both bold and groundbreaking. First of all, they wanted to enhance biodiversity in the heart of the city while achieving significant water savings, aiming for an 80% reduction in water consumption compared to a traditional solution such as grass. In addition, the route had to help reduce water flooding during heavy rainfall through excellent water retention. Reducing CO2 emissions and countering the urban heat island effect were also high on the agenda. And finally, the tram route had to be aesthetically pleasing and fit seamlessly with the city's sustainable vision.
A milestone in greening urban Barcelona
Combining an efficient tramway connection with large-scale greening in bustling Barcelona is a remarkable achievement. Despite complex challenges, Barcelona exceeded expectations with outstanding results. Key criteria for the city of Barcelona included:
- Innovation without overhead wires: implementing an innovative tram system without overhead wires, operating with a third rail at ground level.
- Huge expansion of urban green space: adding over 8,000 m² of greenery to a high-traffic area.
- Climate-resilient design: optimised green design for the Mediterranean climate, where water saving and low maintenance costs are essential.
- Ecological gain: Enhancing biodiversity and reducing flood risks during heavy rainfall.
Ground cover with strong planting suitable for the Mediterranean climate
Sempergreen embraced this ambitious project wholeheartedly, working closely with stakeholders to deliver a customised solution. The tramline’s greenery features pre-cultivated ground cover with 12 carefully selected Sedum varieties, tailored to the Mediterranean climate. The ground cover, pre-grown at Sempergreen’s Spanish nursery in Cambrils, Tarragona, provided an instant-green effect upon installation. This innovative ground cover system is 80% more water-efficient than traditional solutions such as grass. In addition, the system requires minimal maintenance and integrates seamlessly with the third-rail technology. We at Sempergreen are very proud of this sustainable result!
Tangible and visible impact on the city and society
This project is more than a tramline—it’s a sustainable revolution felt, seen, and experienced by the city and its residents:
- Improved air quality and liveability: The green ground cover enhances air quality, reduces noise pollution, and beautifies the city.
- Sustainable mobility: With over 20,000 daily tram users and a reduction of 2,000 cars per day, this project transforms traffic congestion.
- Climate adaptation: Greenery prevents flooding and lowers urban temperatures.
A giant leap towards a sustainable Barcelona
With its new tramline, the city of Barcelona takes a significant step towards a greener and more liveable future. Combining the tramline with Sempergreen’s ground cover highlights how technology and nature can co-create a better tomorrow. This impressive greening effort of 8,000 m² sets a new standard for urban innovation.
Project highlights:
- Technological milestone: The world’s second tram system operating without overhead wires, thanks to third-rail technology.
- Large-scale urban greening: Over 8,000 m² of greenery in the city centre.
- Climate adaptation: Greenery prevents flooding, conserves water and mitigates the urban heat island effect.
- Ecological impact: Boosts biodiversity and reduces CO₂ in a dense urban environment.
- Social impact: Promotes sustainable mobility, improving liveability and aesthetics.
